Welcome to Kickin’ Starters – my weekly ballad to all things my wallet wishes it could crowd fund. This week, nostalgia runs rampant as I find products that definitely remind me of my younger years. Let’s see what we have!
So admittedly, I added this list because of my partner’s obsession with time travel. But actually, it seems to be a genuinely hilarious look at our history and generally good concepts to know and understand on the off chance you get stuck in the past. Plus, if you’re at all familiar with the Dinosaur Comics, then you’ll definitely recognize the author, Ryan North! He’s done some other pretty awesome stuff too, but due to my dinosaur obsession, that’s mostly what I’ve focused on.
I appreciate that this book has a location out of Toronto where it will ship for the Canadian fans – the man knows how to take care of his people. The best description of this book comes from the funding page itself: “This is a non-fiction work of popular science wrapped in a delightful fictional candy coating.” On top of the book, you also get a civilization rebuilding bandana – not your every day piece of fashion (or cleaning cloth)! In general, if you need a good laugh, just go read through the Kickstarter page. No, I mean seriously. Go do it. He lists a number of the headings in the book and it’s just brilliant. It is ready and willing to help you plagiarize popular pieces to make you THRIVE in whatever time period you end up in. You’ll be ahead of your time – quite literally. I particularly like “Heal Some Body: Medicine and How To Invent It.”
The best part? The book is already being printed. No, really. It’ll be in stores in September. This KS is mostly for the bandana companion, and to also have your book signed. Plus, it’ll support indie bookstores as that’s the route it’ll be taking! Does that mean what we think it means? Yes, it means you’ll get your copy IN SEPTEMBER OF 2018!! Yeah, I know. It’s the little things that really get us with these KS. I’m also just impatient.
Why does this bring back nostalgia? I mean, it inevitably will when I time travel to the past and have to relieve my younger years again. Yeah, it’s a stretch, but so is time.
If Dwarven Forge puts something out, chances are I’m just going to throw money at it. This time, it’s a fully painted underground terrain. It’s all hand sculpted, fully modular, many include LED lights, and all of it is just generally just stunning. If you’ve never backed one of their KS before, it’s all in packages, but you can modify them later to ensure you get everything you need/want/desire. There’s so many options, it’s mildly overwhelming. I don’t think I need to say much more on this. Instead I’m just going to share some pictures. Don’t mind the drool.
So the TRUE nostalgia piece in this week’s article (because I know you were wondering WHEN I would actually get to that) is this beautiful piece of work. My highschool years are defined by the Strong Bad emails. I mean, Homestar Runner was THE quotable thing in those days. It STILL IS sometimes. Anyways, so one of the treasures from that time was Trogdor, who burninates the countryside. So bless the powers that be, as someone had the beautiful insight to create a bloody board game out of it.
So I actually LOVE the base part of this game – it’s wooden meeples and tiles. It’s simple, it’s sweet, and it’s just so classic. The upgraded with the plastic figures is alright, but honestly? I prefer the wooden ones.
Now speaking of wood – someone went CRAZY and got the beautiful Wyrmwood Gaming on board (hah, pun intended) to do specialized tiers involving their ridiculously gorgeous (and depressingly out of my price range) wood work. I won’t even tempt you with a photo, as it starts at $200 USD. But honestly, it’s a sight to behold.
Just watch the intro video for the KS. It’s worth it to relive the nostalgia of Strong Bad and Homestar all over again, as they’re the ones who walk you through the game. This is definitely on my list of “must get” for 2018! The game won’t be ready for another year, but I think this is worth the wait.
That’s it for this week! What have you backed thus far? Have you seen anything cool? Reach out on twitter @chaoticrogueent #kickinstarters
