Welcome back to Kickin’ Starters – my weekly love letter (or in this week’s case, shopping list) to crowd funding campaigns that I am currently obsessed with. Apparently this week I was writing while hungry, as all of them are food related! Not a die in sight. Let’s see what I found!
Fossil Fuel Doughnuts
Honestly, I was sold at the concept of a healthy doughnut. I mean – don’t get me wrong. Doughnuts aren’t MEANT to be healthy. They’re an indulgence. But if I can find a way to indulge and it doesn’t totally throw my diet off the rails? I’m in. PSA – I use the term “diet” very loosely in that I make a semi conscious effort to eat decently. It’s not met with a ton of success, but it’s the thought that counts, right?
This is a pretty neat concept – the idea of plant based proteins is definitely a way of life for some people these days (I’m still working my way towards that) so a group of people decided to combine keto, paleo, and vegan diets together and put it in the snack form of a doughnut. The purpose – to create a low sugar energy boost. I’m all for this idea!
Honestly – you can talk about the different diets and their validity all you want, but I think at the end of the day, trying to make an alternative food, and getting creative with it (I mean, just look at their flavour arrangement – matcha, chocolate, lavender, and coffee cake – they’re not messing around), I think it’s always worth trying. Will I back this crowdfund? Probably not. Will I try to find this in health food stores to try? Oh heck yes.
Easy Bake Unicorn Cookbook
Unicorns are all the rage lately, especially with food. Some nights, this thought terrifies me as the amount of dye in foods is kind of ridiculous already. But this book is more than just the fun dyes – it’s all about having fun with your kids (or yourself if you are a kid, or a kid at heart) making fun, easy, yummy treats. Not into having a cook book for some odd reason? You can just get the recipe cards! These fit away in any drawer, and I think is my favourite part about this KS. It’s not just a book. It can be recipe cards instead, which are so much easier to pull out than a book somedays.
This very whimsical Kickstarter is probably not recommended by any dentist, but it’s a fun way to get people into cooking and baking without scaring them. I do feel like an easy bake oven should be provided with each one, but maybe if they relaunch in the future.
Nitro Cold Brew Coffee Lattes by RISE Brewing Co.
As previously noted, I love coffee. I love coffee that is different. I also quite love nitro-cold brew coffee (although I have taken to making my own cold brew at home as well), so of course this crowdfund piqued my interest. It’s canned nitro cold brew, that’s done as a latte (and by that, it seems they mean they added milk to it, but I’ll run with it). I like their approach with this though – there’s no artificial sweeteners, they don’t require refrigeration, and they’re organic. There’s 8 or less ingredients in each, which seems like a marvel in this day and age. On top of it all – there’s three flavours, TWO of which are dairy free. As someone who has to live the dairy free life (or face the consequences from my insides), you’re lucky if there’s ONE dairy free option in a series of 10. In this case, two thirds of the options available are dairy free. What is this madness?! THIS INCLUDES THE MOCHA VARIANT!
Anyways, I digress (I get far too excitable over dairy free options). They’re all 150 calories or less, if you’re into that kind of counting. If you pick a rewards level, you get sent a 12 pack. Pretty sweet (I mean it’s probably appropriately sweet, thanks to the cane sugar). The downside is there are some limitations to where they can ship, which is understandable. Honestly? I just want to see this in stores. This is wicked and seems like a fantastic summer afternoon boost.
So that’s it for this week’s Kickin’ Starters! My stomach is now grumbling, so I should probably take care of that. What have you backed this week? Is it any of these? Chat with us on Twitter or use the hashtag #kickinstarters – until next week!
